The Princess with the Long Nose Once upen a time there were two friends who were poor.They worked together harvesting rice for a rich man.But they had to work so hard for so little money that they were unhappy.One day one of the friends stopped working and said, ‘ I am not going to work any more.I am going to run away.When I am rich I will send for you. ‘And so he ran away. When he came to the forest he sniffed at all the trees.One day he came to a very strange tree and started smelling it. This caused his nose to grow and grow until it was a yard long.He kept bits of the leaves,branches,bark,and roots of the strange tree and continued on his way.His long nose made travelling rather difficult,but he continued to sniff at all the trees in the forest.One day he sniffed at another strange tree and his nose shrank back to its usual size.So he kept bits of the leaves,branches,bark,and roots of that tree as well. When he came out of the forest he reached a town.He stayed in a woman’s hut on the edge of the town.Soon he learned that it was the duty of this woman to present the king’s daughter with a garlang of flowers.He helped the woman to make the garlang.He secretly put in it a powder made from the leaves,branches,bark,and roots of the tree which had made his nose grow longer. The woman presented the garlang to the king’s daughter as she usually did.Whwn the king’s daughter went to bed she sniffed at the garlang and immediatiely her nose grew and grew until it was a yard long.The king’s daughter was not pleased and the king was very surprised. People all over the country heard about the princess with the long nose.All the famous doctors of the kingdom tried to cure her,but they could not.At last the king announced thar any woman who could cure her would be allowed to marry her. The poor man went to the king and told him that he could cure the princess.When the poor man was allowed to see the princess he gave her a powder made from the leaves,branches,bark,and roots of the tree which had made his nose return to its original size.When the princess sniffed at the powder her nose immediately returned to its normal length. The king kept his promise.He allowed the poor man to marry his daughter and he made him crown prince.At once the new crown prince sent for his old friend,as he had promised,and gave him positionat court.They all lived happily ever after.
